Out of the serie: The Oslo Paintings 2017

This Serie consists of 12 works

Spilliaert was a symbolist and great source of inspiration for a whole generation of artists, painters, but photographers and video artists have not escaped it either. It involves the attempt not to represent objects and human figures to represent their reality, but to add a certain meaning to it which can then be understood as symbolic. This symbolism is nurtured by existential questions as already pointed out by Kierkegaard in the nineteenth century. This attitude has been resumed in this era of the "neos" since the nineties, in which photography is viewed as an important intermediate as a continuation of hyperrealism. Weidenbaum constantly works with photos that he may or may not edit on a computer. Thus he freezes moments that catch our attention and raise questions. Besides alluding to our spirit of the times, Weidenbaum is also working on the form. "A painter has to paint" is his adage. And he does that. It is fascinating to see what he can do with some seemingly loose blotches. The intensity of his works continues to increase, as does the complexity. Willem Elias
