Studies on Gustave Courbet is a series in which Peter Weidenbaum enters into a dialogue with the oeuvre of Gustave Courbet. The works are not conceived as literal reprises, but as contemporary explorations of themes that were also central to Courbet: landscape, corporeality, matter, and the direct confrontation with visible reality. From this historical affinity, Weidenbaum investigates how painting can still be a place today where looking, remembering, and imagining come together. The result is a series in which Courbet’s work is not quoted, but reread and transformed into a distinct and contemporary visual language.
